Master Gardener Program

The WVU Master Gardener Program
is administered by the Extension Services of WVU. The
program provides an opportunity for gardeners to improve their
horticultural skills while developing communication, management and
leadership skills. Information about the program can be
obtained by contacting your local Extension Service
Office or clicking on the link below.
Local Master Gardeners' have
played an integral role in the creation, organization and operation
of the New Martinsville Farmers' Market.
They also run a Master Gardeners'
information booth during regular Market hours providing information
to visitors about the Market, giving gardening advice, answering
gardening questions and just "talking garden".

Garden Activities for
October
While
the average Fall frost date has come and gone there is no frost in
the forecast through at least the 24th or 25th of the month.
This has allowed the gardens to continue showing all phases of the
life cycle of plants. Some herbs and flowers are going to
seed, some vegetables have died off, and other plants are almost
ready for harvest. This is also the time of the year to store
winter vegetables.
Specific activities for
October
- Harvest late pumpkins before frost
- Plant lettuce in the cold frame
- Harvest Winter squash
- Plant Spring bulbs
- Seed spinach for overwintering
- Plant or transplant decidious trees and shrubs after leaves
have fallen
- Mow lawns at a low heighth
- Prune roses

Calendar)

Tip of the Month
Now is a great time to get your
soil tested and then make needed changes to the soil this fall so
the garden will be ready to go in the spring. Get your test
kit ant the WVU Extension Office..
Quote of the Month
I cannot endure to waste anything as precious
as autumn sunshine by staying in the house. So I spend almost all
the daylight hours in the open air.
